Jinočany lies about 14 km southwest of central Prague. The Prague Ring Road passes through the municipality and has junction 21.

The first written mention of Jinočany dates to 1406 and appears in the urbar of Břevnov Monastery. Iron ore was mined at the Škroby mine from 1856 to 1964, and its extraction contributed to the municipality's rapid growth around the turn of the 20th century.
